Servant leadership

In my life so far, I have seen very few true servant leaders, and I know how fortunate I am to have a true servant leader as my mentor. Early in my leadership journey, he saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself. For that, I am thankful beyond words.

I think that in every life, there’s at least one person who changes us, who paves the way to a life transition. When I first met my mentor, he was my supervisor, and he used the words “servant leadership” while discussing a situation at work.

When I heard those words put together, I was intrigued and wanted to know more. This was the start of something powerful for me: to be able to work alongside someone who understands that all people matter – that each is the face of Christ.

Because of that understanding, throughout our mentorship journey, my mentor has taught me many lessons. Here are a few:

Be kind. It’s about treating all people as you want to be treated. Don’t look at others through the filter of their job or title; see them as gifts.

Share yourself. It’s important to share something of myself with coworkers. Work days can be so busy that we forget to take time to ask others about their work tasks, about what went right for them today, and about their opinions and ideas.

Share humor in the workplace. I take my job very seriously, but we all need to be able to have fun at work, even when things don’t go our way. Humor can unite team members, reduce stress, increase employee engagement, and so much more.

He also says: listen to others, be fair, be humble, trust in yourself, be a risk taker, and more.

As a servant leader, my mentor has influenced me in more ways than he may ever know. I’ll do my best to see the face of Christ and share the wisdom he’s given me with others.
