Public policy

Legislative and regulatory initiatives

When Congress and the president enact a new bill, federal agencies are charged with creating the detail and implementing the law. These regulations, also called rules, are the guiding requirements for our hospitals, health facilities and providers. By submitting comment letters to federal regulatory agencies, CHI helps shape proposed rules into fair, reasonable and workable final rules.

CHI’s advocacy group monitors and reviews federal legislation and regulations and takes action on issues important to our mission. Depending on what’s needed, CHI will:

  • Notify CHI advocates when we need help delivering a strong message to Congress on a priority issue through Advocacy Alerts.  Draft letters or talking points are provided to our advocates to facilitate their participation in shaping public policy at key points in the legislative process.
  • Ask national and market-based leaders to make the voice of CHI heard in Congress and federal regulatory agencies.
  • Comment on regulations implementing new legislation or updating current programs that will have a significant effect on CHI facilities and the people we serve.
  • Engage content experts from throughout CHI to help shape CHI policy positions.
