The hospital, which was the first in Lexington, has pioneered many other health care “firsts” in the community: the first school of nursing in central Kentucky (1921); the first local blood bank (1939); and the state’s first post-anesthesia recovery room (1951), kidney machine (1956), CAT scan (1974), and more.
