Violence Prevention

Violence Prevention

A cornerstone of CHI's mission of building healthy communities is creating a culture of non-violence -- an essential element of a healthier society.  The call to address violence is firmly rooted in the Catholic tradition and builds upon the rich legacy of our founding congregations.

Non-violence has been an Advocacy priority since 2000 and continues to this day.  Examples of efforts to advance non-violence in our communities include:

  • Public policy initiatives
  • Community-based programs
  • Sharing of leading practices
  • External networking and socially responsible investing

In 2008, CHI launched United Against Violence, the first initiative of its kind to be sponsored by a national nonprofit health system.  The program is a formal commitment to violence prevention that provides funding and support to help CHI facilities create or expand violence-prevention programs in their local communities.

So far, CHI has provided millions in Mission and Ministry funds for violence prevention programs and will continue to do so in coming years.  Examples of the types of violence the grants are focusing on reducing include:

  • child abuse
  • youth dating violence
  • gang violence
  • domestic violence
  • community education

A complete listing of violence prevention grants can be found the Mission and Ministry Fund Grants Awarded database.
