Two members of the Senior Management Leadership Team recently presented Catholic Health Initiatives’ approach to performance management to a standing-room only crowd at the American College of Healthcare Executives’ 2001 Congress on Healthcare Management in Chicago, Ill. Kevin Lofton, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Catholic Health Initiatives, and Ruth Brinkley, senior vice president for performance management, presented two break-out sessions on "Building Effective System-wide Performance Management Programs" that were attended by hundreds of health care executives. Many of the attendees stayed after the presentation to ask questions of the two speakers.

"A lot of people are looking for ways to more effectively manage performance," said Brinkley. "We presented the basic framework of Catholic Health Initiatives’ performance management initiative as well as our results to date and next steps. We emphasized the fact that while the concept of performance management is neither difficult nor complex, effective implementation does require leadership and the kind of rigor and discipline that many of our market-based organizations have shown in implementing the initiative."
