Charles Marr
Chief Executive Officer
Alegent Health
Omaha, Neb.

As chief executive officer of Alegent Health, a joint operating agreement between Catholic Health Initiatives and Immanuel Health Systems, Charles Marr encourages young people in the Omaha, Neb., area to choose careers in health care. "There are shortages in many areas of professional health care," he said. "We need to reach out to schools and let young people know that tremendous opportunities await them."

As the leader of Alegent Health, Marr is responsible for an integrated health care system with seven hospitals and more than 100 additional sites of service. With a goal to heal the body, mind and spirit of those it serves, Alegent Health also has a comprehensive program of outreach services. "Our Center for Healing Ministry provides the only clinical pastoral education program in our region and coordinates many of our outreach activities," said Marr. Alegent Health also supports Our Healthy Community Partnership, a far-reaching program for community health; a center that serves the area’s growing Indian and Hispanic populations; and Hope Medical Outreach, through which physicians and nurses volunteer in shelters. "These things make Alegent Health stand out in our market," said Marr. "We are fortunate to have two faith-based sponsors that have encouraged this type of outreach for more than 100 years."

Marr has worked in health care for more than 30 years, starting as the assistant administrator of Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha. As chief executive officer of Immanuel Medical Center, he oversaw the signing of the joint operating agreement with Bergan Mercy Health System that created Alegent Health in 1995. Marr has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and attended the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Pat, a travel agent, have two grown daughters: Lisa, currently studying for a second career in pharmacy; and Amy, a marketing director.

"I’m really blessed," Marr said. "I look forward to each day because of the opportunity to work with people who see their work as a calling. That makes each day exciting and purposeful in this time of great change."
