Transplants bring recognition to Mercy in Des Moines

Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa, was recently recognized as a leader in locating tissue donors by the Iowa North Central Tissue Services Division of the American Red Cross. Since 1997, Mercy has helped 2,000 patients achieve a better quality of life through tissue transplantation. In March, just the third documented kidney transplant involving a Good Samaritan donor, which means that the donor is not related to the recipient, was performed at Mercy. Also in March, a 33-year-old man received the first combined kidney/pancreas transplant performed in central Iowa during a six and one-half hour procedure at Mercy.
