Midwest Select Merger Produces One of Nation’s Largest PPOs

Midwest Select, a preferred provider organization (PPO) co-owned by Catholic Health Initiatives, Alegent Health of Omaha, Neb., and Mercy Health Network of Des Moines, Iowa, has merged with Midlands Health Partners, a PPO that serves Nebraska, Iowa and other adjoining states. The consolidated network, known as Midlands Choice, is one of the largest PPOs in the nation with 250 hospitals, 10,000 physicians and 630,000 members in six states.

"The merger will result in more health care options and expanded access for employers, employees and consumers, and a more competitively positioned network overall," said Kevin Lofton, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Catholic Health Initiatives. "It also represents a strategic and financial ‘win’ for its shareholders, as the merger of these networks is expected to increase business volume and grow market share for Catholic Health Initiatives’ four market-based organizations in Nebraska, as well as Alegent Health and Mercy Health Network."

Catholic Health Initiatives is represented on the board of the merged organization by Mike Gloor, president and chief executive officer of Saint Francis Medical Center in Grand Island, Neb., and Kent Reckewey, MD, medical director of the St. Elizabeth Physician Network in Lincoln, Neb.
