Grants to House of Mercy in Des Moines provide clinic space, new computers


House of Mercy, a service of Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, is the recipient of two recent grants from local businesses. A $10,000 grant from the Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Altoona, will be used to renovate and expand space in its free clinic, which provides primary care services to more than 800 patients each month. A contribution of $23,648 from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust of Muscatine will fund the purchase of six computers, software and Internet access to assist with educational, employment and developmental pursuits for residents and their children.

House of Mercy is a shelter and home for homeless and troubled women and their children. It is the largest provider of transitional housing for women undergoing treatment for substance abuse in the state.
