"As part of Catholic Health Initiatives, we are empowered to carry out Christ’s healing ministry. It means we have the tools and resources necessary to build upon the 100-year legacy of the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls," said Larry A. Schulz, president and chief executive officer of Unity Family HealthCare for nearly five years.

The market-based organization serves a rural population of 30,000 in central Minnesota and provides a full care continuum. Unity includes St. Gabriel’s Hospital, St. Otto’s Care Center, St. Camillus Place and Alverna Apartments in Little Falls, Minn., and Albany Area Hospital and Medical Center and two satellite clinics located 35 miles away in Albany, Minn.

Schulz said that developing and nurturing new and creative community-based partnerships is essential for building healthy communities. A three-year grant from the Catholic Health Initiatives Mission and Ministry Fund is already believed to be impacting juvenile delinquency and crime through a successful youth recreation program. "We’ve maximized our grant dollars by working with schools, law enforcement and other community agencies." said Schulz. Parish nursing, linkages with human service providers and a collaborative relationship with a tertiary care provider in St. Cloud, Minn., have made it possible for Unity to stay focused on its mission.

Schulz has served as chief executive officer for several rural Minnesota hospitals during his career, and in 1993 was the recipient of the Ten Outstanding Young Minnesotans Award. He has a bachelor’s degree in hospital administration from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., and a master’s degree in hospital administration from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

Schulz said that the challenges of the Balanced Budget Act and other external market forces that face health care providers are also an opportunity to design health care of the future. "Catholic Health Initiatives is on a path to becoming a preeminent provider of health care in this country and Unity Family HealthCare is part of that vision."
