CHI Supports the Million Dollar Marathon
From June 21 to July 27, from Ocean Shores, WA, to Rehoboth Beach, DE, the Million Dollar Marathon will go “Coast to Coast for Cancer.”
CHI has partnered with Above+Beyond, the charity that is organizing the Million Dollar Marathon, to help CHI employees get involved. In addition to personal satisfaction, CHI employees can earn Healthy Spirit wellness incentive points through their participation. Opportunities include:
Running: Employees who are physically fit and able to run 26.2 miles can put on their running shoes and participate. The marathon will pass through several communities that CHI serves, including Enumclaw, WA; Denver, CO; Grand Island and Lincoln, NE; Missouri Valley and Des Moines, IA. (See the route map on the Coast to Coast for Cancer website.)
Supporting: Employees can help a runner with fundraising and run along with them for a shorter-than-marathon distance. Supporters can create online fundraising pages, crowdrise.com, which will be listed on the official event site.
Cheering: Employees are encouraged to come out and cheer as runners pass through their communities.
Other Opportunities: Employees can explore more volunteer opportunities by contacting the Million Dollar Marathon team.
One of the founders of Above+Beyond is Richard Deming, MD, medical director of Mercy Cancer Center, Des Moines, IA. Deming believes in helping cancer patients and survivors realize physically demanding goals: in 2011, he led a group of 14 cancer survivors to the climber’s base camp on Mt. Everest, a demanding trek to 17,590 feet above sea level.
The beneficiaries of the funds raised by the marathon will include a leading cancer research institution and a leading cancer advocacy group.
