Mercy Medical Center, Iowa Organizations Form Iowa Liver Center

Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines, IA, and two other Iowa health care organizations formed a new organization to care for patients with liver disease. The Iowa Liver Center will offer a full range of diagnostic, treatment and support services. Mercy, the University of Iowa Organ Transplant Center and the Iowa Digestive Disease Center are the center's members. The center will:

  • Use shared expertise and resources to ensure the most advanced treatments and services are available.
  • Meet the needs of patients – including those with complex requirements – with a continuum of care.
  • Assure outstanding quality, service and cost efficiency through coordination among all health care staff.

The new center is one of the first collaborations to result from the creation of the University of Iowa Health Alliance. Dave Vellinga, senior vice president of divisional operations for CHI and CEO of Mercy Health Network, serves as chair of the board of the alliance. Vellinga talked about the alliance and Mercy Health Network in a recent profile in the Des Moines Business Record.
