CHI's National Oncology Service Line Stands Out

At the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers' conference in Chicago, breast center leaders from around the country packed the room where Teresa Heckel, director of CHI's national oncology service line, presented details of CHI's unique Breast Center of Excellence program. The Advisory Board Company, a global research and consulting firm, has also featured CHI's oncology service line in publications and conferences.

Heckel and Deb Hood, vice president of the national oncology service line, are eager to talk about why national organizations are so interested in CHI.

"They tell us that CHI is the only national health care provider with a systemwide focus on, and strategy for, its oncology service line," Heckel said."Our cancer centers are very engaged in working together to share best practices, participate in our national affinity groups for oncology specialties and offer clinical trials to their communities. CHI's ability to coordinate these activities across the system is a clear advantage for us.

"OneCare and the data it generates will also contribute enormously to our ability to provide the highest quality of cancer care, at the lowest possible cost, across CHI," she added.

In addition to a rigorous accreditation program for breast cancer centers, the national oncology service line established an oncology dashboard that CHI breast centers use to track performance and compare themselves to their CHI peers. The service line staff is now preparing to launch a similar program for CHI's lung cancer centers.
