Flaget Memorial Improves Breastfeeding Rates
Through the Kangaroo Care initiative of the University of Louisville Hospital’s Center for Women and Infants, Flaget Memorial Hospital has increased breastfeeding rates among new mothers and babies. Kangaroo Care promotes skin-to-skin contact between infant and mom: the baby, dressed only in diaper and hat, rests against the mother’s chest in the hours immediately after birth and periodically thereafter, promoting bonding and encouraging breastfeeding. Kangaroo Care gives new fathers the chance to “kangaroo” with their babies, too. Since the program was implemented, breastfeeding rates at Flaget Memorial have increased from a monthly average of 48 percent to 67 percent in April 2011.
