Team Performs Eighth Hand Transplant at Jewish Hospital
A team of hand surgeons performed its eighth hand transplant procedure at Jewish Hospital on July 10. Donnie Rickelman, 36, of Linton, IN, received the new hand in a 14½-hour procedure that involved 16 hand surgeons and two anesthesiologists. Rickelman injured both of his hands in a factory accident in 1998. He is now receiving a combination of drugs to suppress his immune system and is being closely monitored for signs of transplant rejection or adverse reaction to medications.
