CHI's Prayers are With St. John's

A devastating tornado that struck Joplin, MO, on May 22 demolished St. John's Regional Medical Center, which was part of the CHI family from 1996 until 2009, when sponsorship transferred to the Sisters of Mercy Health Care System, Chesterfield, MO.

As a result of the tornado:

  • Five patients and one visitor were killed at the hospital; 187 patients were in the hospital at the time of the tornado
  • Patients were triaged to Freeman Hospital in Joplin, which is located a short distance from St. John's
  • The hospital, medical office building and surrounding buildings were demolished

Nine CHI employees who continue to live in the Joplin area are safe, though some experienced damage to their homes and property. CHI will access its Employee Assistance Fund as needed to help employees affected by the tornado.

The Missouri Hospital Association activated a medical assistance program and a mutual aid agreement process that allows hospitals to send medical personnel to work at other hospitals in the area. CHI's facilities in Kansas are in close touch with the Kansas Hospital Association and the Red Cross, which are working with the Missouri Hospital Association to be prepared to receive patients or provide additional support.

CHI's President's Council will determine CHI's actions to help the facilities, based on what they learn from Mercy leadership.

Please keep the community of Joplin and especially the patients and staff of St. John's Regional Medical Center in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
