Riverview Place’s “Giving+Learning” Featured on NPR
Riverview Place, a retirement home and assisted living facility in Fargo, ND, was featured on National Public Radio for its "Giving+Learning" project, a community involvement initiative that helps refugees adapt to life in the area. The program matches residents of Riverview Place with refugees from all over the world, including Somalia, Bosnia, Iraq, Sudan and a dozen other countries. Those refugees, who have been arriving by the hundreds during the last decade, are mentored and taught by residents who have "lots of knowledge, lots of experience - a wealth of information they can share," said Bonnie Peters, Riverview's marketing director, who secured funding for the nonprofit program and led the way in connecting retirees with refugees. In the last 10 years, about 550 mentors have helped more than 800 refugee families.
