Governor Matches St. Joseph Community Health Gifts, Times Four
New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and a young friend at a press conference announcing a gift from St. Joseph Community Health and matching funds from the state for programs that serve children.
After the New Mexico legislature cut funding to early childhood programs, St. Joseph Community Health (SJCH) challenged Governor Bill Richardson to match SJCH's $234,000 gift to six nonprofit organizations that provide services for children. The governor responded with stimulus dollars at a 4:1 match. The governor is providing funding of $1 million to restore the budgets of home visiting programs across the state, as well as two programs that provide early childhood development services to homeless children. These programs, in addition to a home visiting program operated by St. Joseph, help ensure that children reach kindergarten with the health and family capacity necessary to support learning.
