Mission and Ministry Fund Awards 34 Grants

The Catholic Health Initiatives Mission and Ministry Fund awarded 34 grants totaling more than $2.7 million for 2009. The grants support the planning, development and implementation of initiatives to promote healthy communities across the country and around the world.

Established in 1996 by CHI’s founding congregations, the Mission and Ministry Fund has awarded 241 grants totaling approximately $29 million to programs across the globe.

The 2009 grants include 14 grants specifically allocated to fund violence prevention programs. “The grants are a component of CHI’s strategic initiative to prevent violence in every community we serve,” said Kevin Lofton, president and CEO. “Our emergency departments see the results of violence every day. Our systemwide initiative seeks to prevent all types of violence – including domestic violence, child and elder abuse, gun violence and school violence – in order to create healthy communities.”
