Nation’s Fifth Hand Transplant Performed at Jewish Hospital

Louisville, KY

The nation’s fifth hand transplant was performed at Jewish Hospital, Louisville, KY, part of Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s HealthCare, on November 24. A team of surgeons completed the transplant at Jewish Hospital Hand Care Center in a record nine hours. The patient is a 43-year old production worker from New York, whose right hand was amputated after an injury in 2006. The hand transplant procedure was developed by a partnership of physicians and researchers at Jewish Hospital Hand Care Center, Kleinert Kutz and Associates Hand Care Center and the University of Louisville. The transplant was sponsored by the Department of Defense, the Office of Naval Research and the Office of Army Research to further research into composite tissue allotransplantation. Back
