CMS Proposes New Measures
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has proposed to add 43 new measures to the required reporting for its Value-Added Purchasing program, commonly known as Pay for Performance or P4P. The new measures would be phased in during calendar year 2009.
CMS has also proposed modifying and adding to the list of hospital-acquired conditions for which it will not provide additional payments.
In addition, President Bush’s budget proposal for fiscal year 2009 includes a provision for “nonpayment of serious preventable events (never events),” and to make reporting of these events a requirement for receipt of CMS’ full annual payment update.
