St. Francis in Federal Way Plans Expansion

St. Francis Hospital, Federal Way, Wash., plans to invest approximately $60 million to expand and upgrade its facilities during the next five years. The hospital will build a new critical care unit, enlarge its emergency department, and seek state permission to add 36 medical and surgical beds. “Our community has grown and we need to grow, too,” said Syd Bersante, chief operating officer for St. Francis. “Last year, we had to turn away about 600 local residents simply because we didn’t have enough medical and surgical hospital beds.” St. Francis currently has a total of 100 beds, including 56 designated for medical and surgical patients. The hospital will also ask the state to designate its special-care nursery as a Level 2 unit that can provide more care for premature babies.
