Saint Joseph Shares Anticoagulant Success

Participants in Catholic Health Initiatives’ Anticoagulant Safety Knowledge Community recently learned how Saint Joseph HealthCare, Lexington, Ky., improved the safety of patients who receive anticoagulant medications. Much of the improvement came through implementation of Catholic Health Initiatives’ “Guideline for Multidisciplinary Management of Inpatients on Heparin and Warfarin” tool kit. Via a May 8 conference call, Heath Jennings, clinical pharmacist at Saint Joseph, explained how a Saint Joseph team changed systems of care to improve quality and safety. Gene Woods, president and chief executive officer of Saint Joseph, said the anticoagulant safety initiative is a major reason why Saint Joseph was recently named the recipient of the first annual Quality Award (in the category of hospitals with more than 250 beds) from the Kentucky Hospital Association.
