Guide to Federal Appropriations Now Available

Catholic Health Initiatives has developed and distributed a Guide to Congressional Appropriations, which provides detailed information and advice on seeking federal appropriations funding for programs and projects that serve communities. The guide includes several success stories from Catholic Health Initiatives’ organizations that have secured substantial appropriations funding. “Securing funds through Congressional appropriations requires careful planning, focused effort and conscientious follow through,” said Colleen Scanlon, RN, JD, senior vice president of advocacy for Catholic Health Initiatives. “The guide will help market-based and community health service organization leaders understand the process, timetable and necessary steps.” Scanlon notes that even with careful planning, the appropriations process can be unpredictable. For example, many directed appropriations were dropped from legislation last fall due to political dynamics and federal deficits from Hurricane Katrina relief and the Iraq war. “While the results of efforts to secure appropriations funding cannot be guaranteed, the effort is worthwhile,” said Scanlon. “In pursuing appropriations, Catholic Health Initiatives’ leaders can establish and strengthen relationships with members of their Congressional delegations. These relationships can be extremely valuable to their efforts to represent the interests of the individuals and communities they serve.” To request a copy of the Guide to Congressional Appropriations, contact Debbie Murphy of the Advocacy Group at
