Four Market-Based Organizations Among 100 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals

Four of Catholic Health Initiatives’ hospitals are on the 2005 list of the “100 Top Hospitals®: Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success” published by Solucient, an information products company serving the health care industry. The top hospitals include Good Samaritan Hospital, Dayton, Ohio; Penrose-St. Francis Health Services, Colorado Springs, Colo.; St. Joseph Medical Center, Towson, Md.; and Memorial Hospital, Chattanooga, Tenn. To compile the list, Solucient analyzed hospital performance based on 2003 Medicare cost reports and MedPAR data from 2003 and 2004. Solucient found that the top hospitals were more likely to provide revascularization to patients with the most severe heart attacks; less likely to have post-operative infections or hemorrhage among patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft or percutaneous coronary intervention; and had lower average cardiovascular-related costs.
