Dear Catholic Health Initiatives Family:

In the season of giving, it’s appropriate to focus on the Catholic Health Initiatives’ Mission and Ministry Fund. Since its creation in 1996, the fund has awarded 130 grants totaling $15.5 million. The fund is a hallmark of Catholic Health Initiatives’ spirit of innovation and dedication to creating healthier communities. The vision of Catholic Health Initiatives – "...transforming health care delivery and creating new ministries that promote healthy communities" – calls for a strong and continuing commitment. The Mission and Ministry Fund is a means to ensure ""our ability to progress toward this vision. The purpose of the fund is to provide the financial support needed to plan, develop and implement new initiatives designed to promote healthy communities and build community capacity. We are steadily amassing an endowment for the fund that will sustain it into the future. Over time, the type of grants allocated by the Mission and Ministry Fund has changed. The fund began by providing grants to implement healthy community action plans and projects. Later, these project grants were joined by planning grants, which provide funds to implement healthy community coalitions. Now, we are adding international grants and palliative care grants to the array of funds available. All of these changes acknowledge that there are many avenues to building community health, and the Mission and Ministry Fund will try to open as many of them as possible. Finally, let me say that I am enormously proud of the work that so many in our Catholic Health Initiatives family are doing to further our mission and vision with the help of the Mission and Ministry Fund. Hundreds of communities and countless lives have been enriched as a result of your efforts. May you and your loved ones enjoy all the blessings of the holiday season.
