Saint Joseph in Lexington Offers Glucose Management System Software

Saint Joseph HealthCare, Lexington, Ky., is offering its online Glucose Management System, which earned the hospital finalist status for the Most Wired Innovator Award, to all market-based organizations that would like to improve care of diabetic patients. The system completely automates nursing documentation of glucose levels and provides graphed, real-time results
and intervention data for physicians and other clinicians. The system also provides the reports necessary for quickly identifying patients who have unstable glucose values. "We believe this software can help other Catholic Health Initiatives hospitals, and we want to make it available to them," said Karen McKnight, director of the Diabetes Treatment Center at Saint Joseph. "There are some implementation costs involved, but no software costs." McKnight estimates that the Glucose Management System saves Saint Joseph about $160,000 annually and frees nurses to perform other types of care for diabetic patients.
