Dear Catholic Health Initiatives Family:

During my first six months with Catholic Health Initiatives, it has been my pleasure to meet many of you. I appreciate the warmth and hospitality I’ve encountered during my visits to many Catholic Health Initiatives’ market-based facilities.

It is evident that Catholic Health Initiatives’ commitment to clinical excellence is alive throughout our organization and in our communities. For example, the Performance Based Development System (PBDS) – the clinical development model being implemented in our market-based organizations – assesses the skills of nurses as they join the Catholic Health Initiatives team. The program establishes a road map for the future growth and development of each registered nurse.

We will also use data collected by PBDS to provide schools of nursing with information that will help them prepare their graduates to join the nursing workforce. This may lead to curriculum adjustments as the schools strive to keep up with changing educational requirements in the health care industry.

This is just the beginning of our work with PBDS at Catholic Health Initiatives. This model of measuring clinical competence can be expanded to include all registered nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, PBDS begins a peer review process and can help establish a learning environment for all those who care for patients.

As we embrace the concept of shared leadership and staff nurses become more involved in shared clinical decision-making, it is my hope that programs like PBDS become a stepping stone to a continuing focus on the clinical, educational and professional needs of our nursing staff.
