Catholic Health Initiatives Market-based Organizations Included in New 100 Top Hospitals List
Three Catholic Health Initiatives hospitals are on the list of 100 top U.S. hospitals for 2001 published by Solucient, a health care information and research firm based in Evanston, Ill. The hospitals are St. Clare Hospital, Lakewood, Wash.; St. Francis Hospital, Federal Way, Wash.; and St. Joseph Medical Center, Reading, Pa. To compile the list, Solucient scores facilities according to key measures such as risk-adjusted mortality and complications, average length of stay, expenses and profitability. Solucient’s analysis found that if overall performance in all acute care hospitals in the U.S. was the same as in the 100 top hospitals, close to 57,000 more patients could survive each year with nearly $9.5 billion in annual expense reduction.
Solucient recently published a list of hospitals that have appeared in the 100 top hospitals at least three times from 1993 to 2000. St. Joseph Medical Center, Tacoma, Wash., is one of only nine hospitals that appeared on the list six or more times.
St. Joseph Medical Center, Towson, Md., and Good Samaritan Hospital, Dayton, Ohio, appear on Solucient’s list of the nation’s 100 top heart hospitals for 2002.
