Authier of St. Mary’s in Pierre speaks to Institute of Medicine committee

Phillip Authier, vice president of patient care at St. Mary’s Healthcare Center, Pierre, S.D., and president of the American Organization of Nurse Executives, spoke recently an Institute of Medicine committee hearing. He recommended that hospitals adopt characteristics of successful work environments to help improve patient safety. He said they should "work toward an environment that fosters quality nursing leadership; includes nursing as an integral part of the executive management team; designs policies and programs that support nursing autonomy and economic competitiveness; is committed to quality outcomes; and places a high value on nurses as essential to the health and well being of the patient and of the community."
