"One of the many things that impressed me when I came to St. Joseph’s was the new, high tech oncology center," said Allan Sonduck, president and chief executive officer for St. Joseph’s Hospital and Health Center, a 110-bed acute care hospital in Dickinson, N.D. "It was evident that the organization was committed to living out its mission to proactively reach out to the disadvantaged, poor, elderly and displaced and providing the resources necessary to succeed."

In addition to the hospital, St. Joseph’s also runs outreach clinics in New England, Kildeer and Beach, N.D. and is working to develop a mobile primary care center to serve less populated communities.

St. Joseph’s has also just completed its second community health needs assessment, in conjunction with 30 different local agencies including law, justice and social services, to improve the quality of life and health status of local communities. "It is vital for St. Joseph’s to have an active role in the community," said Sonduck. "To develop a healthy community, we have to address economic, educational and environmental issues in addition to physical health concerns."

Catholic Health Initiatives helps St. Joseph’s to continue to provide its outreach services to local populations. "By being part of a larger system, St. Joseph’s benefits from best practices sister hospitals have implemented and from the creativity and intellectual activities of the national organization that support the talented staff we have in place," said Sonduck.

Sonduck has worked in Catholic health care for more than 20 years. Before joining Catholic Health Initiatives, he worked for Echo Management Services in Kankakee, Ill., where he provided consulting services, board and organizational development, strategy development and implementation, medical staff development and hospital recruitment. Sonduck also served Provena Health for 13 years in a variety of roles, including corporate vice president for strategic business development and as president and chief executive officer at Provena St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee, Ill. He also was president and chief executive officer at Spohn Kleberg Memorial Hospital in Kingsville, Texas.

Sonduck has a master’s degree in health care administration from St. Louis University, St. Louis, Mo., and earned his bachelor of science in economics from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill. He has two sons, Adam and Matt, who are currently enrolled at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo., and the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wis., respectively.
