Aquino of St. John’s in Joplin carries Olympic torch
Bill Aquino, executive director of HealthFirst, the physician/hospital organization of St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo., recently participated in the torch relay for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. Aquino is one of 11,000 people chosen from a pool of more than 210,000 nominees for the honor of carrying the torch. Aquino, who carried the torch in Kansas City, Mo., was chosen in part for his volunteer work in the community. An avid runner who typically runs about 15 miles a week, Aquino stepped up his training to more than 40 miles a week to prepare for his run with the torch. "It is such an honor to be selected," he said. "It was quite a thrilling feeling."
