JCAHO Coordinators Set to Review and Preview Surveys
Market-based quality directors, JCAHO coordinators and others who coordinate preparedness for surveys by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) will meet January 28 and 29 to review findings from past surveys and preview the survey process for 2002.
The first day of the meeting, to be held in Las Vegas, Nev., will feature presentations by Catholic Health Initiatives national staff members and market-based leaders on best practices in quality and the current issue of bioterrorism preparedness. The second day will feature an update on the survey process from JCAHO surveyors, with time set aside for breakout sessions and a question and answer session.
"We’re looking forward to hearing what the JCAHO surveyors have to say about the 2002 surveys," said Nancy Lima, director of performance improvement for Catholic Health Initiatives. "We know that patient safety will continue to be a focus because it is of such importance to the public." The meeting will include a panel discussion on patient safety led by Joanie Cox, director of performance improvement.
Lima will review findings from the first complete cycle of surveys since Catholic Health Initiatives began to be surveyed as a multi-hospital system three years ago. "Most recently, 15 market-based organizations were surveyed during 2001, with an average score of 92 and scores as high as 98," said Lima. "We’ll take an in-depth look at the most common Type I and Type II recommendations from those surveys, including the issues that caused hospitals to receive recommendations in those areas."
