Eleven-Year-Old Girl Collects 340 Pairs of Shoes for Kids in Need

Article Text

A 11-year-old girl who collected hundreds of pairs of shoes for kids and young adults in need has donated the shoes to the Kosair Children’s Peace Center at Our Lady of Peace, Louisville, KY, part of KentuckyOne Health.

Carleigh Hofelich kicked off her annual shoe drive, called “Carleigh’s Kicks for Kids,” in September 2016. This was the fourth year for Carleigh’s collection drive. When she was eight, she decided that she didn’t want a birthday present for herself; instead, she began collecting shoes to give to kids who needed them.

At this year’s shoe donation ceremony on Jan. 17 at Our Lady of Peace, Carleigh received a special gift, too – a mural that was painted as a tribute to her by art therapists at Our Lady of Peace.

In 2016, Carleigh received a Jefferson Award and was a finalist for a Youth Philanthropy Award for her dedication to her shoe drive.
